Thanks very much, dear Carol, for your kind words. I was the same age as the main character in 1975, so this just didn't ring true to me. It was unnecessary to the story and I'd have been much more attached to the character's vulnerability if the author had not given him such a foul mouth. It is hard to go against the grain sometimes, but I'm glad it did! 💖
Julie, I've never had children and I can't explain how disturbing it is when I read/hear books with teens acting in the way you mention. I just can't stand it, it's obviously a big trigger for me and I'm so glad I had already decided this book wasn't for me. Thanks for speaking up and making it clear that I want to avoid the characters in this story.

Thanks so much, Marilyn!! It's very disturbing to me, as well.,. I'm glad I'm not the only one bothered by this. There are too many great books out there to support that will not insult our personal moral code. 💖
You got farther than I did. I've decided there are so many great books out there that if it doesn't grab me from the beginning I am not diving into it. And I don't need to like any best seller that gets 5* reviews.
I must admit I did like his first book, but this one- I finished it, but it so dragged. It’s good to stand by your principles, Julie!

Thanks very much, Antoinette! It was a long book- I'm pretty sure I'd have struggled with it no matter what. 💖

Thanks so much, Peggy! I couldn't agree more! 💖
Julie, you are not alone!! In fact, I mentioned why I didn’t care for “We Begin at the End” in my review years ago, was because of the disrespectful teenage/young girl. It just never sat right with me. If that’s the case with this book, I know for sure that I don’t want to read this!! You made a wise choice DNF’ing this book. I honestly think people were just going along with it for the hype 🤷🏻♀️

Thanks so much, Rachel. It didn't sit right with me either- and I think you hit the nail on the head about going along with the hype. 💖
Good for you Julie, standing up for your principles. Great review and hope you love the next book! 💙
A fair, honest review, Julie! The language in this book was a lot for me, too.
I don't know if you got far enough in where Charlotte was introduced but she was a very vulgar teenager and I didn't care for her character at all.
You are not the only one! There is a time and place for cursing. I curse like a sailor. I did NOT do that in the 70s and I certainly didn't do it in front of adults. Nor did any of the kids I know. There was one kid who did but adults didn't tolerate it or him. Now, they would. Then, absolutely not. When authors write about an era, they should know what was acceptable then and recognize how much society has changed in past few decades.
I'm impressed you made it to 32 percent! I just read the first two chapters or six pages and the horrible writing and ridiculously drawn character in the 13 year old have me ready to give up now.

This book is, maybe was, on my list. Thank you for your honest review. I think it is difficult to not to join the crowd, or even good friends, with a difference in opinion on GR. I applaud you for taking this by the horns and expressing your view point. I've struggled with this at times. Bravo to you, Julie.
