Bonnie G. I try so hard to enjoy Miranda July, but it never works out for me. I love that she exists and has an audience, but our respective senses of humor do not seem to intersect. Ever. Sorry you didn't have any luck either.

Anna Greenberg We just picked this for book club!

Bonnie--this was my first time trying her. I keep thinking there is something wrong with MY sensibilities, but maybe, as you mentioned, it's possible that my see of humor doesn't intersect with July's.

switterbug (Betsey) Anna wrote: "We just picked this for book club!"

Anna--I hope you do like it. It's not a bad book, it's just not for everyone. Either that, or I need to wait for a different mood!

Let me know what you think Anna. It may be just me. I loved Kajillionaire, but most things she has pumped out feel like (as Tim Gunn would say) student work.

Jodi Betsey, I think you did the right thing in DNF-ing it! It sounds just awful.😝

switterbug (Betsey) Jodi wrote: "Betsey, I think you did the right thing in DNF-ing it! It sounds just awful.😝"

Thx, Jodi! There are just so many books out there waiting to be read. I don't want to struggle through a book that is this repellent.

message 8: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Good for you, Betsey . Not worth spending tge time when all those good books await.

message 9: by Gila (new)

Gila Gila Overwrought is Miranda July in a nutshell. Glad you kept me from attempting to crack this one open!

switterbug (Betsey) Angela M wrote: "Good for you, Betsey . Not worth spending tge time when all those good books await."

Exactly, Angela! There are p many books on my list that I always have one ready to roll out!

Gila, if only July was a little bit of something else besides overwrought!

message 12: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Crytzer Fry You gave it more of a shot than I would -- getting 100 pages in. Next! I also struggle, often, with first-person narration - because, often, it is so poorly written. So this is a hard pass for me.

message 13: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer nyc I just read a review of this yesterday of someone who loved it, and it piqued my interest. I’m grateful to see yours to temper my expectations, Betsey. I feel I must try one of her novels, so we shall see…
Thanks for your review :)

Oh, absolutely, Jennifer! I definitely see July's talent, and my word is surely not the last word. It is just my specific taste. Some folks despise raw oysters, whereas I love them. This isn't a mater of being a bad book, but it's a bad book for me. I always hope that my friends on GR will enjoy every book they select! I look forward to seeing a Miranda July review from you, Jennifer : )

message 15: by Dennis (new)

Dennis My wife took a shot at one of her novels and gave up. However, we both enjoy her films and acting so maybe literature isn't her forté.

switterbug (Betsey) Dennis wrote: "My wife took a shot at one of her novels and gave up. However, we both enjoy her films and acting so maybe literature isn't her forté."

Dennis, that sounds about right. Her acting is sincere and confident, if I remember.

message 17: by Ishtar (new)

Ishtar I found it boring and confusing and so farfetched. Just didn’t get the hype and 5 star reviews

switterbug (Betsey) Ishtar wrote: "I found it boring and confusing and so farfetched. Just didn’t get the hype and 5 star reviews"

Yup, I don't relate to all the generous hype, either!

message 19: by Nawal (new)

Nawal Exactly the verbage I was grasping for

message 20: by Davina (new)

Davina Okay, this sentence is making me laugh out loud: "Also, the sex scenes aren't sexy, they make me never want to have sex again!"

So true. There was nothing, absolutely nothing sexy about the sex scenes.

message 21: by Davina (new)

Davina "Also, the sex scenes aren't sexy, they make me never want to have sex again!"

Thank you for this sentence because it is literally making me laugh out loud!

So true. There was nothing, absolutely nothing sexy about the sex scenes.

message 22: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Yes, "the sex scenes are not sexy..." I agree completely! The heart to heart honesty with her best friend was also cringy - I wondered why this friend liked her, why anyone liked her, especially her husband. The audio book was especially bleak as it was read in her own depressed voice. It feels like an open mic night confessional from a narcissist reading her diary out loud. Maybe therapeutic for her but I'm not getting paid to listen, so no thanks.

message 23: by Lexi (new)

Lexi Agreed! She was mean spirited and unkind. No thanks.

switterbug (Betsey) Lexi wrote: "Agreed! She was mean spirited and unkind. No thanks."

Lexi--it's like--I just need a book that doesn't hammer us like this!

message 25: by Laura (new)

Laura Christy This review describes my experience perfectly! “Listening to someone coked up for hours at a time” exactly, it was exhausting and I do not understand what people found sexy or funny.

Alyson W. Llerandi hahahahha, these comments made me laugh...YES, exactly! This sex makes me never want to have sex again!

switterbug (Betsey) Laura wrote: "This review describes my experience perfectly! “Listening to someone coked up for hours at a time” exactly, it was exhausting and I do not understand what people found sexy or funny."

Thank you, Laura! Yes, very exhausting!

switterbug (Betsey) Alyson W. Llerandi wrote: "hahahahha, these comments made me laugh...YES, exactly! This sex makes me never want to have sex again!"

I know, right? Alyson, I was ready to become a nun after this one LOLOLOLOL

message 29: by Ang (new)

Ang Exactly! I felt this book was exhausting and could not finish it.

message 30: by AJ (new)

AJ Bernstein Thanks I brely got through a few chapters and disliked the tone and I'm not going to trudge on.

message 31: by Maria (new)

Maria "listening to someone coked up for hours" is a chef's kiss description of this book

message 32: by Cindy (new)

Cindy I felt part one was sooo boring, spiced up occasionally with strange sexual tension nd activities. I listened to the author narrating and kept hoping it was close to the end….nope, only a third in. Awful plot and execution.

message 33: by Teech (new)

Teech Bell Perfect summary. My thoughts exactly. I gave up at the end of Ch5!

message 34: by Aravinda (new)

Aravinda am about to give up on this and just checking around the reviews in case I missed something. but it is so boring and getting more so by the chapter

message 35: by Claudia (new)

Claudia de Oliveira I could not finish this crap.

message 36: by Kay (new)

Kay R Try listening to the audiobook, which the Miranda July narrates. I think it brings out the humor in the book. So many times I laughed out loud. Not sure if I would have liked reading it in book form.

message 37: by LeeAnn (new)

LeeAnn I waited 6 weeks for this book from the library, I couldn't agree more. DNF...log winded diatribe

message 38: by S. (new)

S. Frank It was exactly what I felt (and wrote, only in German)!

message 39: by Gwen (new)

Gwen This! I’m actually on page 101! I feel like I’m slogging through. Are we getting to a point?

message 40: by Naomi (new)

Naomi LOL! I’m on chapter 4 and the cokehead analogy is accurate. Not sure how much more I will read. It’s a little scatterbrained for my taste, the way the narrator can’t get through a single thought without shooting off in different directions.
