I read Divergent and found it meh. I tried reading book 2 and could not get past a few chapters. I found the whole society's premise faulty. Because I didn't like the books I didn't bother with the movie, so I can't say which is better, but I thought the books were terrible so that's a low bar.

Maze Runner is no better, I couldn't get through the first book of that, and neither could my teen daughter (but she might have been influenced by my negative opinion of it.) :)

My prediction was that this isolated city that was supposedly the only survivor of this war and everything else was a wasteland would turn out to be a lie, and it turns out everything outside is just fine and better, but the isolated city was a method of dystopian control, etc. etc. But I didn't feel like going any further to find out.
