Ashleigh I had picked up on some humor similarities btwn you and Lex, and as a reader, I am very here for it!

Ashleigh I think I broke my comment by including emojis. Oops. There was a 2nd part to my comment that just said I also wanted to let you know that as a neurodivergent (AuDHD) reader, I always find your long, nuanced reviews to be an absolute joy. :-)

That is high praise - I mean about the humour, not about breaking GR. I don't think I'm as funny as Croucher, honestly but their humour works exceptionally well for me.

And thank you so much for your kind words about my incoherent reviewing <3

Alison I wish I could like this 1000 times. You always so eloquently describe all your thoughts, which, extremely coincidentally, are also most of my thoughts, and its just really gratifying to read a review and be internally shouting, “YES, THOSE ARE THE WORDS!”
Anyway, all that to say, beautifully put! And Lady Bridget deserves her own separate review, haha.

Oh gosh, thank you so much - that's so kind <3

And, yes, Lady Bridget was amazing. I think there was such a lot to talk about in this book that I ended up barely touching upon the characters, which was a shame because I adored them.

Leslie Sir Gawain & the Green Knight is also my favorite piece of Arthuriana. The last paper I ever wrote in college was on it & The Big Sleep & something about chivalry 😂 & I used to teach it when I taught British Literature to my 12th graders & was always like GUYS THIS MEDIEVAL POEM IS SO GODDAMN WEIRD!!! Anyway, here for the Sir Gawain love- the movie from a couple of years ago wasn’t exactly faithful, but did a good job of conveying its weirdness, I think. Plus who doesn’t want to look at Dev Patel for 2 hours?

Anyway yes I have been meaning to read this book for a year (oof) & now need to bump it up the TBR. I love Arthurian things! I love humor! I love YA! I love Lex Croucher’s other stuff! Let’s go!

PL This review made my day. As an Arthurian fiend since childhood this book absolutely hit me so hard and made me wish it had existed when I was young. The lead characters are all so compelling in their own unique ways and the world building and storytelling so complex and ultimately woven together so well.
I love your green girdle reference for it 💚

Omg I'm so fascinated by the Gawain poem I went to a lecture about it once and the guy acted like it wasn't a *totally weird* piece of writing. I felt positively gaslit 😂

I confess the movie version might have been on step *too* weird for me, or at least it wasn't weird in the right direction? But I always enjoy Dev Patel so, y'know, that probably helped.

Hope this gets a bump up your TBR. From what you've said, there's legit no reason why you won't love it.

I, too, am a long-standing Arthurian enthusiast - and this book really did hit all the spots for me. Maybe that's why I spent half the review demanding a second book that doesn't exist 😂

Lulu Tyler You really made me want to read this book rather sooner then later AND to reads this fascination poem too (explained like that even my 9th graders would want to read it like yesterday :-D)

message 10: by Sari (new)

Sari I delighted in reading your review and am definitely bumping this up on my chaotic TBR. It’s high time I read more Croucher 💚

message 11: by Henrietta (new)

Henrietta Thank you for the utterly delightful Gawain and the green Knight recap. I loved Gwen and Art as well. Wish there was more.

Reading life is always better with more Croucher in it!

Oh god, I was worried I'd rambled off unnecessarily - but GATGK was in my mind a lot as I was reading, so thank you :) And so happy the book worked for you as well as I did for me <3

message 13: by Faith (new)

Faith Hands down best summary/analysis of Gawain and the Green Knight I've ever read 😂 And great review, this sounds really good!

Marie WHAT a review. Thank you, I had this on my tbr list but I shall definitely move it up now! (Also thank you for that incredible summary of Gawain and the Green Knight, which made me laugh out loud - and I don't do that very often either!)

Sally Speight I heard you mention this book on a podcast and I erred on the side of maybe and put it on my TBR list. I am not big on the Arthurian literature so the summary of that poem made me go down a bit of a rabbit hole. So after googling a fuckton of Arthurian l am sold on the book. However I have read none of Crouchers previous work. Would this be a good book to start with?

It would be a great Croucher to start with it - their Regency series can be read completely as standalones but I know people (including, ahem, me) can feel some kind of way to starting a series in the middle. This one is standalone and a really strong introduction to their work.

Alfred Read this on your recommendation. Loved it. Recommended it to my mom and sister. Mom loved it. Sister is considering reading it.

Ahhh, that makes me so happy! I'm delighted to hear you and your mother enjoyed it - and your sister hopefully soon to follow :)

message 21: by Monika (new)

Monika K I finally read this per your review and it was so cute!! There’s been quite a few Arthurian retellings lately and this one feels really fresh and witty given everything it’s trying to do. I liked it!

Also, I think maybe Lucifer the cat is a distant cousin of Gollum the cat? 😉
