switterbug (Betsey) Great review, Bob. I like your way of putting it together, especially the police life v personal life. I wish French would go back to writing authentically flawed individuals. Nobody please slap me for saying that I think she has slowly sold out to American views, as seen by Europeans.

I haven't read enough of French's work to have a judgment about your claim of her selling out to American views. I'll try and remember to let you know once I've read more. Don't worry--I'd never slap you even if I disagreed with you. It would be pretty boring if everyone agreed on everything (though in today's political climate I wish we were all in more agreement!). And yes, Rob is authentically flawed--big time.

So, Betsy, I just reread my review of French's The Searcher, the only other novel of hers I've read, and what I argue is that French is writing a version of an American Western set in Ireland. This may--or may not--have something to do with your comment about French and American views.

Hanneke Great review, Bob! Sounds like a special detective which I am sure I would enjoy as well.

Thanks, Hanneke. He is special--a very troubled (and in many ways messed up) soul that because of childhood trauma is at odds with himself and almost everybody he knows.

Hanneke Bob, I do like books with troubled and traumatized protagonists. Provides interesting characters!
