Recommendation Swap June-July 2024 > Likes and Comments
Great to see the enthusiasm :) I'll be checking before we start that everyone who has signed up has made at least 20 comments across this group's pages. If you don't think you have, then you've got until 1 June to do so :)
I'll be in too, Erica - I like that we have a couple of months to find and read our recommendation. Are there any guidelines around recommendations? Something along the lines of our Bookpool guidelines?
Awesome. In answer to your question Angie, I can def put a few parameters around recs but will try and keep it as open as possible :)
In my original post I mentioned that to participate you have to have commented in Book Loving Kiwi posts at least 20 times. This is just to make sure that people don't sign up and then disappear. We want to make sure everyone gets their rec from someone :) With that in mind the following members need a few more comments posted in the group (any thread is fine) before 1 June. Ch4rli3, Khaela (19 more comments) and Stacey-Beth (7 more comments).
Looking forward to pairing everyone up :)
What an interesting idea!Definitely interested. Maybe a proviso that books have to be available through the NZ library system or Open Library?

And same for Payton :)
Not too long until June. Crazy how quick this year is going! If there is anyone else that wants to join in please sign up in this thread before the end of May.
Remember that one of parameters of participating is you need to have at least 20 comments across Book Loving Kiwis threads prior to 1 June :)
Haha. I'll take it. But mostly because I know you joined in for an earlier challenge on the Group page :)
Right everyone, sign-ups are closing early. I just realised I'm going to be away when June ticks over so won't have my laptop to update this challenge. Some parameters/suggestion about recommendations:
- give your rec to your person as soon as possible (at least by the end of the first week of June). If you don't receive a rec by then, let me know
- no self-promotion
- if your recommendation can't be sourced in the manner that the receiver wants to source it (e.g. library) then the person can request another recommendation
- if you're not already, you might want to make your Goodreads profile open, or become friends with the person giving you a rec (so they can see what you've already read/see what kinds of books you like etc.)
So this is the list of who you will recommend to.
P.D.R recommends to KAT
KAT recommends to ERICA
ERICA recommends to BRONWYN
BRONWYN recommends to ZELLIAN
ZELLIAN recommends to KATHLEEN
KATHLEEN recommends to CLAUDE'S
CLAUDE'S recommends to JENNIFER
JENNIFER recommends to ANGIE
ANGIE recommends to STACEY-BETH
STACEY-BETH recommends to CAROL
CAROL recommends to P.D.R
If you guys are anything like me you love finding the perfect read for someone else almost as much as you love finding the perfect read for yourself :)
This is just for fun, so happy reading! Don't forget to report back here what you get recommended, and then your thoughts.
Hello Kat,how about giving 'The Woman at the Wheel' by Penny Haw a read? It's creative nonfiction really, telling the story of Cacilie Bertha Ringer who marries Carl Benz and helps create the Mercedes-Benz company.
Jennifer wrote: "Cool, thanks for organising Erica 😊"+1. & its a great idea.
PDR, I know you said no romance but I did the book compare thing & see you have read Mary Stewart, so I would like to recommend what I consider her best book. This Rough Magic My memory is that it is more of an adventure than a romance.
But if you have already read this or are adamant about the no romance I do have another book in mind.
Gee, it's hard recommending a book to someone you don't know. Hi Zellian! How about this one?
The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle. If you've read it already, let me know and I'll come up with another. Cheers!
Bronwyn I had a look at your read list and I recommend The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O'Neill. If you've already read it or can't get it then let me know, I have back up options :)
Bronwyn wrote: "Gee, it's hard recommending a book to someone you don't know. Hi Zellian! How about this one?

Ooooooo thanks Bronwyn! I'm always actually surprised by how much I end up liking suspense/thriller like books, even though I don't actively go out looking for books like that.
I've placed it on hold through Libby, it doesn't have a long waitlist so I should be able to start it not too long into June!
Hi Stacey-Beth - I'm going to cheat a little and give you two :)I've had a look at your books and the first 2 or 3 I thought of are in your TBR so I'm going to recommend one of those - The 10,000 Doors of January by Alix Harrow.
But if you want something that isn't in your TBR, I'm also going to recommend The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde.
Looking forward to seeing which one you choose :)

thank you, Carol. I've seen the film of this so will try to get the library to get it.
Erica wrote: "Bronwyn I had a look at your read list and I recommend The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O'Neill. That read list is way out of date, I haven't added to it in years, I think. But it seems you've done well.
P.D.R. wrote: "thank you, Carol. I've seen the film of this so will try to get the library to get it"Let me know if they can't. I still have a couple of ideas for you. :)
& Stacey-Beth has sent me my book suggestion by message. :)
Angie, sorry I am a little tied up but will make some time after work to check out your stuff so I can make an informed recommendation! I see we have quite a bit in common genre-wise 😁
Hi Jennifer,You have quite an eclectic taste in books. I see you have read a novella from Dervla McTiernan but not the full series? Therefore, I recommend The Ruin which is book one. In case that doesn't appeal I also recommend The Sun Down Motel. And lastly if that doesn't take your fancy We Begin at the End. I feel like the last one might be great as I see you enjoy Michael Robotham. Let me know if you can't access any of these.
Happy Reading, Claudine.
Jennifer wrote: "Angie, sorry I am a little tied up but will make some time after work to check out your stuff so I can make an informed recommendation! I see we have quite a bit in common genre-wise 😁"No worries Jennifer - don't stress. I've got my current book to finish first anyway 😊
Angie wrote: "Jennifer wrote: "Angie, sorry I am a little tied up but will make some time after work to check out your stuff so I can make an informed recommendation! I see we have quite a bit in common genre-wi..."Hi Angie, sorry about the delay. I attended Wellycon over the weekend plus I've had house guests since last week so I've been a bit distracted hahaha!
I have looked through your books and decided on three options:
1. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. Reasons: it is one of my fave books of the last year or so AND it is on your to read AND you have the book!
2. The Postcard by Anne Berest. Reason: I loved it :)
3. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Reasons: it was a very unique book and everyone I recommended it to loved it. Plus I loved it. I liked all the pop culture references and from your preferences, I hope you will too!
If you aren't fussed on any of the above, just let me know. I have a back-up list hahahaha
Also as an aside, since you like library-themed books, you might like Bibliophile by Jane Mount. It is more a reference guide with recommendations, so that is why I didn't recommend it for this challenge - I just thought it might be a book you would find interesting.
Have fun!!

Sign ups will be open until the 1st June and I will then post the list of partners the following day. You can then send your recommendation within the next couple of days. The swap runs for 2 months so there is plenty of time to find and read your book.
Please comment with your name here if you would like to join in. We ask people to have 20 or more comments in the group in order to participate.
Please remember to "report back" when you've read the book recommended to you in this thread, so we can all see what you read and if you liked it.
Any questions, just comment in this thread.
