Excellent review, Jonathan! I have just put this on hold at my library, so compelled am I by your review. 19 weeks wait, so it will be awhile. Glad that you loved this, hope you're next read is equally as good. Happy reading!
Outstanding review, Jonathon! One of the best books I've read this year. I'll never be able to pick up Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn again without thinking of this book. Few authors, if any, can accomplish what Everett has with James.

Thanks Betsy..After discovering him one of his books on the staff picks at the library, I quickly realized we were well suited due to our passion for being different. While there many great authors, I've yet to find one whose creativity, willingness to break new ground and style are even close

Yes, I agree, Jonathan! Everett is an unafraid, confident, curious, and courageous writer.

An author who defies genre categorization, his brilliance and skill at storytelling is unrivaled. His sense of humor in stories like this (I Am Not Sidney Poitier show the depth of his talent too

So glad you found the perfect match, Jonathan!! When we find “the one”, it makes reading that much more enjoyable! :)
It's possible I've heard merging genres with Everett before this, or maybe it was some unique way Erasure was written. I would have read that one, but saw the recent movie by chance. With James, Everett showed true mastery of plot when the two characters became separated. Great character work.

With this story he merges humor, drama and a dab of mystery. Regardless, this book is one of his best and I look forward to what his creative mind will bring us next
Phenomenal review! I’m going to read The Trees next, but I’ll probably go through the rest of his works too. He is an extremely gifted writer.
Carol wrote: "Great critique, Jonathan! You've inspired me to look for other novels by the author." Thanks so much for the compliment and apologies for the delay. And you are correct about Prof Everett's ability to create unique characters, premise and themes. If you want to experience his humor, make sure to read I Am Not Sidney Poitier and Dr. No. In the former, he inserts himself as a character which is something we rarely if ever see with others
I really appreciate reading your take. James is undeniably a harrowing and important story, and I agree that Everett’s ambition in re-entering such a loaded literary space deserves a lot of respect. Even where we landed differently, I enjoyed seeing how strongly the book resonated with you.
Thanks Pam.. I do appreciate perspectives of others even when different from mine. As an outlier, I lean towards authors who succeed across multiple genre, create unique characters and plot and inspire, humor and capture the human spirit. I'd recommend you read his others and keep an open mind, sense of humor and laugh when the mood strikes you. What's your name? Not Sidney. OK then what is it then?
