Raven Do local book signings in your area at local shops, meet people. People are more likely to make a purchase on something that feel could be risky if they get to talk to a person, and meet you. If they don't like the genre ask about friends or relatives that do, and encourage them to get it as a gift.

Get business cards. THESE ARE SO NECESSARY!! They have made life so much easier, and now when people ask or show interest I can just give them a card. They should have the website to your book, your name, and the book title( If is a series, just the series title) on the back of the cards have QR codes that take them to an amazon link or something similar so they can check it out, and make the purchase at later date if they want or give your card to someone else who maybe interested. You can also give them out at book signing.

Put up posters in public places advertising it. You would be surprised how boredom being can be your friend as an author.

Have friends who have read it and like it, promote it. Word of mouth is still King when it comes to advertising.

Also talk to libraries, getting your book in one can help you get recognition.

Just some suggestions to help. I had no luck with social media, so don't get too down about that.

How did you approach your local book stores? Did you bring hard copy books with you? Leave bookmarks or business cards? I'm not sure how to approach a store with my tiny sales and zero name recognition.

Each week I interview a different author on my website at www.ritaleechapman.com. I don't have a huge following, but every bit helps! If you are interested in this free website, please contact me through the site.

P.A. I'm looking for reviewers for my debut novel 'Red Gifts in the Garden of Stones'... it's a literary fiction (ie character based, with subtle humour and zero car chases) and I know it's —as one bookshop put it—'sub-genre' and has an audience over 40... not what most review sites seem to accept. But the people who have read it, love it. And then don't write a review, sigh.

I'm getting a few author events lined up, which will be good in this state; but those adorable niche overseas audiences will never find me at this rate. Suggestions?

Red Gifts in the Garden of Stones: A tale of grief and ghosts and at least one small dog

I did approach local shops and asked to speak to either the manager or the owner. I brought a copy with me (softcover), and looked through it with the person who would be helping me set up the event. My first signing I did not have business cards, but now I do leave cards with the person who will be organizing the event. Some stores will do consignment, other want book buy back. I have found creating a three hour time block for doing the signing and sales, gives me a good gauge of how my book is received in that area. If I don't do well in the area, I then can focus time and effort on the shops that do well.

I do encourage you to speak to the manager or owner(some stores have book manager, whole job is to find new authors) in person. Over the phone, is not as successful as meeting them in person.

Ronnie I seem to have a similar problem as Pam. The ones that have read it said is good and they liked it but then they didn't leave a review. I am glad to have my novel with one of the biggest bookstores here in Canada, Indigo, but as far as getting reviews, it is still lacking...

Here is the link to my novel --> https://www.amazon.ca/Perfume-Cigaret...

I've heard in several places that podcasts are the new book tours. You might look for podcasts that target your market. They are always looking for people to interview. I know the last part of that statement is factual. After my recent book became an Amazon #1 Hot New Release in 4 categories and a #2 Best Seller in one category, I am suddenly being contacted by radio stations and podcasters, wanting to interview me. I did a little homework and found out that there are at least 40 well-known podcasts that target my readers and they are all looking for people to keep their audience interested. I have to get busy.

Catherine Smaridge While I know Raven means well with her advice to do book signings, but in my experience and that of my friends they don't do much. You travel at your own expence, stay in hotels or B&B's at your own expence and then (here in the UK) at least nobody turns up unless they are your family or friends as you so ably state you've badgered and annoyed already. The amount of books you may sell don't cover your expenses unless you live in a large town with several large bookstores that are within walking distance and agree to host your signing. Unfortunately, unless you hire professions to market your book, which is very expensive, there doesn't seem to be a way around the marketing problem.

Julia, I just discovered StoryOrigin.com. It's $10/mo.

What I found on StoryOrigin is that you can do a number of things: create an author website (optional), create a book magnet, swap newsletters, join group promos, create your own promo, run campaigns, integrate your mailing list from MailerLite, MailChimp, and other mail providers, create universal links for your books so people in other countries can easily purchase and download it, offer review copies of your book, offer beta copies, create a page for a collection of your books, create your author profile.

There's a tutorial for everything you want to do so you're not left hanging and wondering how to do something. Evan Gow is the sole owner and he manages the site full-time. I have experienced that he is very prompt in answering your questions.

I have no idea how many authors are on StoryOrigin, but there are quite a few.

The cool thing about StoryOrigin is that you can decide whether or not you want someone to review your book or not. Too often people will "say" they will review it, but don't. StoryOrigin has a tracking mechanism that shows you a reader's track record. If that track record is low for returning reviews, you can opt out of using them. This is so cool.

The other cool thing about StoryOrigin is that I don't feel like I need to "beg" people to review my book. I can swap with others, or merely target those I want to send a request for a review. Everyone the site is doing the same thing you're doing ... trying to market their books ... so you don't feel intimidated to ask for reviews or swaps.

If you sign up for StoryOrigin, let me know what you think. Just shoot me an email.

I just joined on March 29th. I'm still learning how to use it, but I'm impressed with how quick it was to get started. Took me two to three days to realize I didn't need to do a lot of work to get going. That's because I'm so used to this process taking forever. Not so on StoryOrigin.

This is my home page on StoryOrigin:

https://books.awriterfirst.com

This is one of many downloads to my book:

https://storyoriginapp.com/directdown...

Let me know what you think.

Remember, like anything in this business, you'll need to be diligent to stay on top of your promotions. I plan to get very familiar with this site before I discount it. I'll advise you do the same.

Nothing wrong with typical author interview podcasts, but if you want to try something a little different too, and if your book is a good candidate for it, my podcast "The Page 1 Challenge" is something to consider. See more at http://thepage1challenge.com

Hi there Jeff! How does it work?

message 21: by Jeff (new)

Jeff S You send me the text of the first 2 pages and if I think it is a good fit for the podcast, I'll put your book in the queue (which is pretty short right now). I also ask for some "color commentary" from authors - (not ad copy or promotional content) some little bit of trivia or comment about a character. You can listen to few episodes to get the idea.

No cost. You are trying to promote your book, and I'm trying to promote my podcast. Mutual benefit.

Note: not every book is a good candidate. I don't use religious, self-help, poetry, or overtly political books. And not every perfectly lovely novel goes from zero to 60 on the fist page or so. It's a somewhat silly premise, but it's all in good fun.

You can message me thru the website.
