Just finished a book with a mental illness element (the main male character’s wife has been institutionalized for years, powerfully affecting his life): South Riding by Winifred Holtby.
I don't know if this will fit the theme but I've searched my shelves and come up with Hamlet, Revenge! by Michael Innes. I believe a murder takes place during a private performance of Hamlet and as Hamlet is about madness I'm hoping I can sneak it in to qualify!
Innes’s The Paper Thunderbolt is partly set in an asylum so that would be another possibility. Alternative title: Operation Pax.

How's everyone doing? I just started 'This is Going to Hurt'and I'm already a third of the way through. In turns: funny, shocking and heartbreaking, I'm enjoying it very much.
Between work and the flu I’m having a very bad reading month, not sure if I’ll make it to reading a book in this category. I’ll try because so far on this genre go-round, I have a perfect record.
I know it was a bit of a cheat but I finished Hamlet, Revenge! and thoroughly enjoyed it. I gave it 4 stars. There were a few mentions of madness but it wasn't the central theme - that was more focussed on why Hamlet delayed in taking revenge.

Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea, The Bell Jar, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Girl, Interrupted, Still Alice, The Secret Scripture, Alias Grace, The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry, Elizabeth Is Missing, to name a few.
This time around I am going to read This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor - as it will also get me something on my Dusty Bookshelf Challenge.
What would you recommend and what will you be reading?
