Liz So it's the whole gamut of mental health for April. Your book can be fiction or non fiction. Possible contenders for this genre group include:

Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea, The Bell Jar, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Girl, Interrupted, Still Alice, The Secret Scripture, Alias Grace, The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry, Elizabeth Is Missing, to name a few.

This time around I am going to read This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor - as it will also get me something on my Dusty Bookshelf Challenge.

What would you recommend and what will you be reading?

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen Still Alice by Lisa Genova The Secret Scripture (McNulty Family) by Sebastian Barry Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood The Psychopath Test A Journey Through the Madness Industry by Jon Ronson Elizabeth Is Missing by Emma Healey This is Going to Hurt Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

Abigail Bok Just finished a book with a mental illness element (the main male character’s wife has been institutionalized for years, powerfully affecting his life): South Riding by Winifred Holtby.

Thomas Ott I recommend "Saturday & The Witch Woman." It's a true & amazing slave story.

Kate I don't know if this will fit the theme but I've searched my shelves and come up with Hamlet, Revenge! by Michael Innes. I believe a murder takes place during a private performance of Hamlet and as Hamlet is about madness I'm hoping I can sneak it in to qualify!

Abigail Bok Innes’s The Paper Thunderbolt is partly set in an asylum so that would be another possibility. Alternative title: Operation Pax.

That's very sneaky, Kate ;)

Liz How's everyone doing? I just started 'This is Going to Hurt'and I'm already a third of the way through. In turns: funny, shocking and heartbreaking, I'm enjoying it very much.

Abigail Bok Between work and the flu I’m having a very bad reading month, not sure if I’ll make it to reading a book in this category. I’ll try because so far on this genre go-round, I have a perfect record.

Abigail Bok Thanks, Liz!

Kate I know it was a bit of a cheat but I finished Hamlet, Revenge! and thoroughly enjoyed it. I gave it 4 stars.
There were a few mentions of madness but it wasn't the central theme - that was more focussed on why Hamlet delayed in taking revenge.
