If the shoe fits, wear it :-)? I recently read a small collection by him and can only echo your appreciation Fergus - this is stunning poetry.
Thing is, Ilse - he somehow managed to maintain the lonely burden of an outspoken candour ALL throughout his long creative life! And his ear is so perfect it puts most poets to shame - a remarkable literary icon.
Well, I’m about one-third through that one! I could never be as outspoken as he was in his observations, and have to take it slowly, though doubtless it IS the great American poetic epic of recent times.
Fergus wrote: "Thanks, Nat! And I’m glad most people aren’t taken aback by it."
For some reason, most people seem to turn away from poetry. But it is beautiful when done well (as "The Pink Locust" shows so well).
Thanks for bringing new Writers to me Fergus, I always learn something from your reviews.
Mimi, thanks for the great tip. Being the old timer I am, I’m anything but au fait with new film releases, but will try to remember it when I scan my video websites. And you know, when I was young I had a similarly mawkish view of Williams - who was in reality sharp as nails - and certainly knew how to verbally spit them at his enemies!
Great review. I truly believe William Carlos Williams is the greatest of American poets. He never disappoints.
Fergus wrote: "Yes - I agree, Kenny - he is non pareil!"
Time set the contemporary poets aside and go back to the master.
Thanks for sharing! I've heard his name, but not familiar with his work. William Carlos William is on my radar now to check out!
For my money, he was easily the most accomplished American poet of the Twentieth Century! And one of the most forthrightly candid poets, ever.
