Sue Miz Oh my god! It just came to my notice that the only thing u thought original about this book which is the connection between the rider and the Dragon and the dragons wit and conversation was also taken from another famous book, Eragon
Was anything original in this book?😅
I should lower my rating to one

That was inspired by the grandpa of all dragonriding novels, "the dragonriders of Pern" by Anne McCaffrey great books, if you like dragons and scifi I can recomend them to you, but they are old, so don't judge them by todays standards.

Anyway, lovely review, thank you very much for it, you saved my time, and money.

I will definetly check "the dragonriders of Pern"

and Yes I would certainly love some recommendations
absolutely I do not judge based on today's standards. I always check the date of publication of the book. I remeber reading a historical highlander romance book that was published in the 90s
it had a Non-Con scene in it and a lot of mysogeny (in our standards) but still loved it and its one of my 5 star reads

The fourth wing is not a bad book, as i mentioned I enjoyed it. Maybe you'll love it. I just couldnt overlook all these plotlines

THANK YOU. I've been curious about this book but wary about the buzz, seeing so many friends giving it high praise, so I've been checking reviews; so many mentioned their absolute love for the dragons and the idea about dragons not only choosing their riders but their special bond with them: telepathic connection, sharing thoughts and emotions with them, that riders can feel and be influenced by their dragon's urges such as lust. That dragons communicate between them on page with great banter.
I've read this before.
I mean... THIS IS PERN basic concept!

None of the reviews I've read mention McCaffrey and I'm shocked, lol! I see lots of comparisons with Acotar, Divergent, GOT, How to Train Your Dragon, Harry Potter. Alright, I suppose I've aged myself with McCaffrey's reference here?!

Anyway, thank you for mentioning Anne McCaffrey :)

Sue Miz Naira wrote: "I was going to buy this book because the hype of BookTok"

It is a good book
maybe you'll love it
it is so well written
but Personally, I do not think it is fair to give a book more than 1 star for showing unoriginality. not fair for the authentic authors other trying to bring new ideas just for a person to come and take them
I am still going to read book 2
maybe it will be original
because the author has a touch for writing

Oh my God! This book just keeps sinking itself! 😄

I haven't known anything about The Dragon Riders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
So I Google it and they are 24 books about riders bonding with their dragons
I ordered the first six books
I hope I get them all

message 8: by _boundbytales (new)

_boundbytales Hmm that's not entirely fair. In a fantasy world, there are bound to be repeat storyline or things in other books. With this logic I could pick up any fantasy book and compare it to another with ease.

Sue Miz Elizabeth wrote: "Hmm that's not entirely fair. In a fantasy world, there are bound to be repeat storyline or things in other books. With this logic I could pick up any fantasy book and compare it to another with ease."

For sure, because almost every fantasy is influenced by a myth or folklore. and we find many authors that are influenced by others. Stephen King's The Dark Tower series was inspired directly by a Poem and by Tolkien LoTR
but, and this is a big BUT, each of these fantasy authors brought also their own element, their original plot, and their authentic storyline
I am not against snipping and even using same-line quotes
but bring your own for GOD sake

I dare you to find one storyline that is original to this book. JUST ONE
even the chapter introduction is the same as the Fifth Season

message 11: by Jillian (new)

Jillian The Dragonriders of Pern series was so famous that the author became the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction and the first to win a Nebula Award. She (Anne McCaffrey) was actually called the Queen of Dragons for decades because of it. She was THE FIRST to write telepathic dragons and set the standard for all future dragon books that would become popular after her (including Eragon). Even the scene in Fourth Wing where Xaden and Violet are lusting after each other because their mated dragons are having sex was directly copied from Anne McCaffrey’s books. In her books, dragons typically only communicate and talk telepathically to their bonded riders, and when mated dragon pairs engage in sexual activity, their riders will similarly feel lust for one another. Fourth Wing copies it all. The first book is called Dragonflight and was published in 1968, but there’s a ton of books in the series that she continued to write all throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I met her at a fantasy convention a few years ago, and she truly is the Queen! It annoys me that so many people keep praising Fourth Wing as one of a kind and saying that Rebecca Yarros invented this new unique communication system for dragons. No, she did not. Sorry but no. It’s just that so many of her fans are too young to know about the older books she copied from.

this book just keeps sinking itself more and more
and as you said

I hope to have them all

If I am rating based on enjoyment then it is definetly 5 stars

Christa Rayne Troupes, they are called Troupes for a reason *laughs.* But I get it, you can only write so many books because you start seeing similar patterns.

message 15: by Lesley (new)

no sweetheart
in fiction there are
the theme
the story
the plot
the characters

and then the teeny tiny thing that some of us crave but has absolutely no effect on the story whether they are there or not called tropes
if you don't know the difference that's ok
a little googling goes a long way

I was wondering when some of you petty naggers will show up
It's really pathetic when you post about another issue in a different post especially since I have one already up where you can breath your poison there

anyway, if you know how to read, which I doubt
1- I said I am ok with little copying or sampling as long as the author bring their own (which if after a miracle I would agree with you, Neva did that)
2- pages of proof?????? really where?? I think I also put proof in my post where VL copied others but you are blind as well as illiterate
3- Plagiarism is such a big word that involves legal action. I do not use it like some of you do or wage a war against the author or the book. I said I enjoyed the book and many who commented on my post I encouraged them to read it and form their own opinion
4- go write your own review defending your darling

if you reply or show any disrespect after than I am going to report you
have some dignity girl!

message 18: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Have some dignity? Says the one who has so much spare time on her hands she shreds other peoples books, yet supports one who plagiarised and got caught. Sorry if I touched a nerve there not my fault you can't handle the truth. Maybe get a different hobby, or I'd like to see you try and write a book since you have so much spare time.

"Maybe the pitter patter of the sound of ignorance"
"Huh! well, ignore it. It will go away"

message 22: by booksta_lana (new)

booksta_lana Majority of literature is not original and is inspired by other works. Many many sci fi and fantasy books are based on Lord of the rings and Dune. Many modern fantasy are based on very old fantasy that mostly nobody is reading anymore. I highly doubt that’s stealing. If it is then every thriller author steals because most of those books are very similar.

I agree with you copletely except on two points

1- don't use words I haven't used. "Stealing" is such a harch word. Copying and Sampling in fiction is accepted

2- I wish ppl would read the review thoroughly to understand what I plainly stated. "I am not against copying or sampling as long as the book brings their own added plot or storyline"
so I will ask you the question I ask everyone
"What did FW bring to the table? show me one original plotline that we would consider this book owned!"

message 24: by Claire (new)

Claire Robinson I did not rate it 1 star I stretched to 3 but all of your points are so valid. I marked it down for many of the same reasons. I hate how people aren't seemingly allowed their own differing opinions. We can't all like the same stuff!

and you are abosolutely right
and 3 is very valid good review
I did not hate the book
I like reading it. it gave me such a nostalgic comfort read
but when they promoted this book as this "new high epic fantasy" I was like "well, where? where is the originality, at least give me a part!"
and my integrity could not give it more than 1

but no! another copied concept! could this book sink any lower

it is the same. I read the synopsis for Dragon School. A crippled girl joines to become a Dragon Rider and everyone around her believes she'll be dead before they take their first flight!
Yep! right about the same hehehehe
Expet FW addes sexiness to the YA mold

Thank you for pointing it out

message 29: by Francie (new)

Francie I’m currently reading this book and I picked up on GoT IMMEDIATELY!

message 30: by Cortney (new)

Cortney Cunningham Soooo I enjoyed this book immensely but also my favorite author is Naomi Novik… have you read her books? Her two most famous series are the Scholomance (magical dangerous school) and the Temeraire series (riders bonding with dragons who are bonding less and less with humans and talk to their riders telepathically). 🤔 I totally agree with a lot of your points, but I definitely think their was some NN rip off too! 🥴

wait till you reach the end. I am dying to know what you think

also, I don't mind having similarities, but seriously! bring your own! I mean what was the point of making V's hair blond white! sure she has the roots brown (as if pigmentation works like that!) but I mean make it any other different color :0 no need for the Daenerys reference ehehehhe

Are you want telling me that the writer came up with the "kingdom protected by wards from zombie-like creatures who have the abiltiy to raise the dead and make blue fire dragons and only die by special metal" ALL BY HERSELF "gasps" without watching or reading a single episode/book of Game of thrones!!????😂😂😂😂

You had to be mentioned
I was planning on writing a long ass review on both the characters/writing and the copycat issue
but then read yours and it was so much better and said everything

as to the purpose of this book? they wanted to give some people who do not want to read ALL these books an abridged version 😂
and as a strategy it worked

but in a way, i am thankful for this book, because it showed me who I can trust their reviews and taste 😊

message 41: by Juliana (new)

Juliana Hahaha I love this review. This book is every single YA novel I’ve read mushed into one… every single thing about it was unoriginal. I think you hit the nail on the head with the specific examples here. Not to mention the “cliffhanger ending”…. I read it and rolled my eyes 🙄. I genuinely wish I could have enjoyed this book the way other people did but I don’t understand how there are so many 5 star reviews?????

This is like "Left overnight" where you take out all the frozen goodies and pretend you have a feast

as to the 5-star reviews, The answer is easy. Most of those have not either read a fantasy or read the original ones.
This book knew its audience
the marketing was on point

message 50: by Dam-ae (new)

Dam-ae I did think while reading this book that it was awfully similar to Eragon and reminiscent of the Game of Thrones' White Walkers but with your review putting everything together? Oh, man, there's nothing original about this story, is there? Even the two dragons thing is a cheap cliche, even if it's not directly taken from another piece of media.
