Damn, really? Say it ain't so, L! Lol;) that is unfortunate. I've had this on my list for a while. I might remove it after reading this. A fine and fair review!! Onwards to better reads!
Wow, interesting. I loved this book. Hahaha. I appreciate your review as always you articulate your thoughts so well. I did enjoy the timelines and the characters back and forth. Overall thought it had a really interesting Vibe and turned out to be more of a mind @&$) at the end. I agree not horror but more haunting of the mind for me.
@Debbie: Yeah, unfortunately! LoL I was hoping it would be better but that's what I felt happened to me while reading. I did get a lot of reviews and as I always say, reading is subjective anyway. I hope if you do read it, you love it, ESPECIALLY if you enjoy Gothic ghost stories. Thank you so much for the kind words as that means so much to hear about my review :-D
@Catherine: Right? Oh for sure, definitely read it as I'd love to hear your thoughts on it whenever you get to it :-)
@Marcie: LoL right? I'm so glad to hear that you loved it as yeah, it just didn't click for me, unfortunately. LoL it definitely was a mind #### to a degree since I wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't. I did enjoy her style of writing as I thought she was good but I definitely wanted scarier moments and maybe just a regular flow of a read without needing so many timelines.
That's a great point about it being more of a haunting of the mind than actual horror, that's how I felt! I chalk it up to an interesting Gothic story about a family with light ghost elements to it. Nothing really scared me at all in this novel and to me, that's an issue since I wanted something scary to read!
@Carmen: Thank you for the kind words, my friend! I hope your next cup of coffee or tea is amazing :-D
@Mariga: Yeah, same here. It just wasn't scary enough, dragged on, and I just felt it was a confusing mess with three timelines. I think two timelines, maybe going to the past and sticking to the present to fill in the gaps could work but even like that, it's VERY hard to execute on a dual timeline book unless you're great at it. Unfortunately, it just didn't work in this novel for me.
You KNOW I don't do animal harm! I don't care how awesome the ghosty ghost might be :D Thanks for pointing out the animal harm TW. I kicked it out of my list faster than a slayer baseline. LOL.
@Debbie: ANGEL OF DEAAAAAAATTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHH! LoL yeah, I agree 100 percent as you're very welcome for pointing out the farm animal harm! GET IT OUT OF HERE!
(while listening to Angel of Death by the almighty Slayer \m/)
Great review as always.
Thank you for the warning. 'Just' animals are also creatures with feelings. Will have to skip this one.
I'm having a hard time getting into this one myself, but I'll try to push through for the group read lol great review!
@Dollie: Thank you so much for the kind words! Yeah, it's a shame but awe well, already enjoying my new book more anyway :-D
@Hanna: Thank you, my friend! That means a lot to hear as you're very welcome for the trigger warning. I agree, I love all animals and even though if they get harmed in books doesn't bother me since I just consider it words on paper, I'm always mindful to let my fellow readers know. I'd hate for anything to get triggered by it since I know many that do and it just messes them up so I always mention any that I find while reading :-)
I read this book long time ago and I have zilch memories left about this book. However, I remember that I didn't like it. I felt no weirdness or scariness. I like your review though. Your trigger warning rang a bell in my head. Anyway, I bought another book written by her. Hopefully, it will be good.
@Violet: LoL exactly that! It wasn't scary, weird, or all that too creepy. It had a few moments but then it got drowned out by all this timeline stuff and way too many characters. Thank you so much for the kind words on my review as that means a lot to hear, my friend :-)
Which book did you get? I hope it's better than this one!
@Diane: Same here! I was just bored while reading and stuck in endless dialogue that just went on and on and on. LoL awe well, it is what it is :-)
LTJ wrote: "@Violet: LoL exactly that! It wasn't scary, weird, or all that too creepy. It had a few moments but then it got drowned out by all this timeline stuff and way too many characters. Oh does it claim to be horror or gothic… or gothic horror bc that makes all the difference. Classifications can certainly be misleading. All of her books are slow burns, and are gothic and definitely not in just the plain “horror” genre if placed correctly.
I wasn’t all that pleased when The Last Road on Needless Street was classified as horror. It’s just not. If you read it it’s not.
I really don’t think this book is plain horror either but I would call it gothic. I loved it but I had the right expectations going in.
@Violet: Ah, I see, please let me know your thoughts on The Whispering Muse whenever you get to it to see if maybe she bounces back or something! I'd love to know :-)
@Shainlock: It's under horror, gothic, historic, and paranormal. I just think she's trying to do too much here and not have a straightforward approach as to what genre or category this fits in. It just didn't click with me at all.
I honestly think it shouldn't be labeled as horror, maybe a paranormal gothic story or something as you're right about that! LoL yeah, I enjoyed The Last House on Needless Street but agree that it's not really super scary or true horror, it flirts with it, but more of a thriller if anything.
LTJ wrote: "@Carmen: Thank you for the kind words, my friend! I hope your next cup of coffee or tea is amazing :-D"
It was! Thank you.
I agree with your review. If you want to give it another shot, I’d recommend you “The Shape of Darkness” also written by her. :)
@Enrique: Thanks, my friend! I've made note of that and will check it out, thanks for the recommendation :-)
Yeah LTJ. I think maybe had you known what it was categorically going in … it might have been better for you. That’s a shame. Oh well.
So is Bone China.
Maybe if we keep saying this it will catch on ;) ;)
@Shainlock: LoL that's very true and yeah, a bit of a letdown as it is what it is. LOL let's scream HORRORRRRRRRR at the top of mountains!
I definitely understand you. This book isn't for everyone, but I just loved how mysterious this novel was. I loved the 1600s flashbacks because I wanted to know more and more about Anne Bainbridge. The cruelty to farm animals was chilling and I think it's mainly a mystery novel with a spook factor to it. You can try "The Corset" by her as I heard its a really good novel! :)
@Faraz: Exactly! That's exactly how I felt, heavier on the mystery aspect and not enough horror for someone like me. I'll check out "The Corset" as I appreciate the insight :-)
@Sasa: Exactly! That's how I felt and wow, considering you enjoy books in such a time period, that confirms everything. Awe well, onto the next one!
DNF. Got half way through the book, but each time it was time to get back to reading, I was reluctant, and it felt like a chore. Just could not get into the book. Very disappointing, as it showed so much promise.
I agree with this. I wanted to enjoy it more than I did, nothing scary about the Companions, just creepy moments and too infrequently. There were also too many illogical decisions and the 1866 timeline too stretched out for me to really get invested.
@Willy: Great minds think alike! Yeah, same here. This wasn't scary enough, even though the idea was good. It wasn't executed well. Onto the next one!
So sorry you didn’t like it. It’s one of my favorite books, very eerie. It turned Laura Purcell into an auto buy for me 💜
@Susy - I really liked it, too. It was a slow burn and very definitely horror. @LTJ...your trigger warning leaves out some of the most horrendous triggers in the book. I know you don't do spoilers, but this book has ALL the triggers. I suppose if one is an HSP, horror shouldn't really be one's go-to.
@CopaSribe: I know what you mean! I try to keep things spoiler-free and not put triggers that could ruin books. LoL but you're right... it's horror... it's expected to trigger people!
Ah thank you LTJ. This one was on my TBR but I think I'll skip as our tastes are very similar and I'll trust your review.
@Karine: Anytime, my friend! Awe, thanks for the kind words. That means so much to hear. Yeah, I don't blame you. This was a dud!
I hope you've been well :-)
