Agree! Alix was way too gullible! Great review!
This is on my tbr list and on hold at my library. I’m a bit over my quota of being aggravated by a book character right now, but seeing as the waitlist is looong, I may be ready by the time the book is available! Great review!

I understand. Maybe it is good that the waiting list is long. Very well written book though.

Yes. I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if Alix would have been more perceptive
I had serious problems with this book and only gave it 2 stars: I was going along okay with this story and anticipating how it might turn out. Most of it I'd guessed but I knew there would be additional twists as the remaining characters chimed in with their viewpoints. Warning if pedophilia is a trigger for you don't go near this book.
And then we came to the ending of this book and all the final twists were revealed and to say I was disappointed wound be an understatement. I'll have to include spoilers to explain why. So the 2 stars is a compromise...if I based my rating on the conclusion it would have been zero stars.
I felt as though Josie was being blamed for hooking up with the 42 year old man who was such a great man when she was only 16 years old. A 16 year old's brain is not fully formed and whatever evil things Josie did later in life I can't forgive this book for blaming her for the actions of the pedophile. I also have issues with Alix supporting her husband in the way she did when he disappointed her time and time again with his binge drinking. I thought the female characters were poorly drawn and the men no better.
Hmmm. . . Now you've done it. I don't know if I am going to read this or not. It sounds problematical. Great review Joey!

You make some very valid points. After I finished the book, I read several reviews that agreed with you and had major problems with the way the author “ victim blamed” Josie for her relationship with her mom’s 42 year old boyfriend when she was 16. I guess I got so caught up in disliking Josie for other reasons I didn’t notice it as much. But, You are right and the insinuations by the author that Josie was the manipulative predator in stealing her mom’s boyfriend are wrong and should have been removed from the story.

There are reviews all over the place and definitely some triggers for those that have dealt personally with sexual abuse and victim blaming. I disliked the main character for other reasons so it is hard to recommend it as a must read.

The problem here is that the book is very well written as to the style and the progression of the story line. It tends to suck you in and I can easily see how one might just accept it all as "possible." But I and others as you noted reached a point where we just said "Wait a minute. That isn't plausible." And that spoiled the book entirely for me. I had read some of the negative reviews and didn't understand what they were complaining about until I hit that wall in the story where it all started to unravel.

Be careful...it is not the characters that annoy me so much as the positions the author seems to be telling you are the right ones. By all means read the book and see if you don't see what I mean. I don't think it is providing any spoilers to just say that the author seems to take a side on the issue of pedophilia and nature vs. nurture for a couple characters in the book.
Yeah, unlikeable characters can dampen my enjoyment too! I need at least one character I can like and root for in a story. Nice to see you still enjoyed this one! I’m still on the fence about reading it.
Terrific review!
I had to search for your review.
Perhaps we have different editions (sometimes not all editions are blended in).
I feel honored. You maybe right that reviews might be connected to the editions. Your review was right on point.
You make some excellent points about Josie's character development. What a frustrating situation! I am sticking with my 5-star rating, though. 😉
MULTIPLE times I found myself saying ALIX. We know how this ends how do you not!?!? The amount of times she doubted herself. Also, can we talk about the restraint? If someone I JUST met chose to repeatedly explain how my partner fell short - no. Immediate - we aren’t on that level please exit.
