I had no idea this was originally a fanfiction! I have also never watched star wars with rey or kylo so I didn't get the fanfiction vibes at all and ended up loving the book lol

I never read the original fanfiction, but it felt so obvious to me that it was. The telltale for me are the episodic nature of conflict and easy resolution for it. The goal in fanfiction is to get the couple together and to give fans the pining scenes they want..usually. So you have a lot of short conflict moments (usually with tropes) before the characters go back to their hearts fluttering. It doesn't so much build on conflict or development. That distracts fanfic readers looking for the romantic angle. I loved how THW started and it felt like a real book, but then started falling into these patterns quickly.
YES. I’m reading this now and only found out it was fanfiction after requesting the arc. All of this is perfectly entwined to how I feel! Thank you for putting it so eloquently 🙏

Thanks for the insight, this will be a skip."
This book was created from a wildly popular Reylo fanfic! I actually love Reylo but THW shortcomings is making it pretty clear why it may be worth snagging stuff based on fic from the library moving forward.
I actually don’t even know that fans of ACOTAR will even like it - even though I don’t think ACOTAR is fine art I did enjoy it as a guilty pleasure read but this one didn’t give me any of that. I agree with everything else you said as to why it didn’t work and I think exactly because of those things it was missing the swoony/addicting feeling that you get from ACOTAR. The characters here felt pretty bland in comparison
This is a fantastic review and I could agree any more, what could have been such a cool world and magic system is dropped completely from explanation and in turn replaced with very poorly written character development.
I think you’re so right that this book is truly being marketed to the wrong people, I expected a high epic fantasy with romance but this is much more romance than fantasy.
Reylo is my least fav ship in almost all media sigh i forgot to skip my fairyloot so guess ima throw it on pango

i imagine its gonna sell for a lot of it helps
I didn’t realize it was Reylo fanfic. Just from the synopsis, I thought it was a Shadow and Bone ripoff. Thinking I’ll pass on this
Waaaait a minute! Is this where Landscape With a Blur of Conquerors went?!? I was looking for it to re-read it, and noticed the author had taken it down.
This was such a wonderful review! As someone who has never seen Star Wars (insane, I know) and also loves ACOTAR/FBAA I do think I’m going to read it. I really appreciate your well rounded review! I think knowing what to expect to an extent will pull out in my favor
I'm totally agree with your reveiw!
I don't really enjoyed Hurricane Wars and it was hard to finish it, BUT it was so different for me with ACOTAR series (10/10) I would say that this is not comparable with SJM books.
I just finished listening to the audiobook and came to GoodReads to figure out what was wrong with the book (beyond the main characters just sounding like really bratty teenagers for most of it). I did not realize it was a fanfiction, but the moment you said it, the whole thing just clicked. The storytelling did just feel very uneven in a way that fanfiction allows for but novels do not.
Totally agree with your Review about hurricane wars. But I wouldn't say it's comparable with acotar.
I couldn't disagree with your review more!! As someone who has read a variety of romantasy and fantasy and adores enemies to lovers, I think this is one of the better ones I've read!! The writing is beautiful, I love the characters, and the world is intricate and very interesting. Especially the magic system. No book is perfect, and I do love when side characters are explored more or at least more involved, but I dont think the lack of side character involvement took away from anything here. I loved this book a lot and think it's worth a try for anyone considering it!! It was very different than I expected, but I ended up loving it.
Exactly this! I felt like there was no build up of them romance and everything just happened because it had to happen for the romance. There was no chemistry build up and because of that everything felt very off and in some parts really hard to read without a twitching eye because it felt cringe.
I haven’t read any SJM except Throne of Glass, and it’s one of my all time favorite series. But I wholly agree with your review. It read TOO much like a fanfic turned novel. And the characters always changing feelings toward each other within one page - was annoying as hell.
I haven’t read any SJM or the other books mentioned, but I also haven’t watched any of the new Star Wars movies nor did I have any idea this was a fanfic until after I finished it so for me I really enjoyed the book haha; I thought it was entertaining :)
I’ve read SJM and A broken blade but this one is worse. I don’t read fanfic so the oddness of this book caught me off guard. Fanfic is so different, it can’t be compared to a fully fleshed novel
