Sari This. This review is poetry 😂 And I do concur with your assessment. Enjoyable little ride with decent bones. Could be elevated.

These kind words will not save you from the fact that this is all your fault.

Blandrea So on to Wet, Hot Allosaurus Summer next? Between the two of these books I have spent way more time thinking dinosaur junk than I ever thought I would...

Contrarian that I am, while I think Dino Stud might not be dino enough for me, I suspect WHAS might be just too dino for me. I am basically the Goldilocks of dino porn books: not too little, please, but also not too much.

dobbs the dog Excellent review, as always. I had very similar feelings about this book. Fun for what it is, would have liked a bit more. 🦖

Thesincouch I get what you mean about feeling that you are taking the joke too seriously basically. I'm the same - I feel like I either get swept by the story and I don't care or I'm like but why or yes, and? That's why I like my most tropey romance novels either balls to the wall or so well thought out that it makes sense, and I dislike the middle ground (which many people like and enjoy!).

Beatriz Alexis, you are hilarious! But we already knew that!

Thank you - I found that kind of "like this but..." feeling hard to articulate. I neither wanted to come across as completely unfun dickhead or fail to respect the intent of the book itself.

Oh god yes. Massive 'this' to, err, this.

The middle ground is death to me. Give me *utter* nonsenses or zero nonsense; thank you. Or else something like Strange Love that is bonkers but takes that bonkerness extremely seriously.

Thank you?

It me. I'm the problem, it me.

Ali Between wolpertinger and cloaca, I am dehydrating from laughter. Excellent review, I’m absolutely certain the book cannot compare.

message 16: by Monika (new)

Monika K Ok fine. I'll read it. I've been rebelling against the peer pressure surrounding this, but now I think I must give it a try. ;-) I do really like the cover art... Dino clinch!

message 17: by Kikkibird (new)

Kikkibird Yesss. I’m so glad you read this. I think I may have experienced this book the way I did (I delightedly rode the dino-tinged, insta-lusty, absurd gauze that is Dino Stud — I mean, I had Questions but set aside my disbelief with relative ease, it seems) because I haven’t read any books that are, well, more nonsense? So now I’m very curious what books fit the *utter* nonsense bill, because I think I’ll like them quite a lot.

I mean it is lacking in both wolpertinger and cloaca; but it has plenty of dino-related fun.

Omg, don't give in to peer pressure. Peer pressure is bad. *has recently given into to peer pressure*. This is quite fun and super quick: and I agree the cover art is delightful.

I can't actually think of any utter nonsense off the top of my head, but Strange Love is my go-to rec for "this is a bonkers premise but the author makes it work in a way that is both genuinely fun and genuinely emotionally sincere."

Angela K I downloaded this with my new kindle unlimited free trial and have breezed through the first 4 chapters. I blame you (but in a good way). Thank you for your reviews in general and also this one specifically. I sometimes skip them because my TBR list is way too long already and your reviews often send another book to “want to read” for me. But with a title like Dino Stud, I had to at least check it out. Lol

There is quite a long chain of blame as regards this book ;) I hope you're having fun with Dino Stud, it's definitely a breezy read!

Jemiu Ah, I can relate so much to seeing fun as something profoundly work intensive. At least with how I engage with media, and I like it that way. I set out to enjoy the deliberately and delightfully shallow books out there and find myself writing 40 pages of notes and a 10-page essay. And then I queue up the next one every time. Rinse & repeat. I love it.

Monsterfucking books, though? I'm obsessed with these--all that potential for cultural differences, interrogating biases, sexuality and gender fuckery--but I feel constantly underfed. I can't think of all my recommendations right now, but have you checked out the Monstrous series by Lily Mayne? It's fun and doesn't end the stories at the forked dick. Not the over-serious brick & stone meal about fucking aliens I crave, but a well-earned icon in the subgenre. For shameless monsterfucking that takes itself entirely seriously, try Lyn Gala's "Claimings" and "Earth Fathers" series (the covers are a terrible delight).

Taking fun too seriously is definitely a Mood. I'm also super aware that it can come across as a sort of ... failure to get it to others, so I try to be careful there.

Thanks for the, uh, monsterfucking recs. But with a few exceptions I think this is just not a genre that works for me.

Dawn "MASSIVE TBR" Allsun I prefer your reviews to some of the books! ❤

Alexis Hall Dawn wrote: "I prefer your reviews to some of the books! ❤"

That's very kind but reviews take a lot less work than books ;)

message 25: by Angela (new)

Angela K So I finished this a couple days ago and um… I see what you mean in your review. I have Questions but as it stands… well, I don’t regret reading it, at least, but it could stand to be fleshed out more (no pun intended). And yes, I absolutely did some overthinking on this one. But, that’s what I do too.

Not a huge fan of monster fucking stories and I generally avoid them. This is now the second one I’ve read, and both I picked up based on your review (first was Strange Love).

One thing I love about your reviews is I get a pretty good idea of what I’m signing up for if I decide to read the book. I liked Strange Love a lot more than I thought I would (I was dubious even with your positive review) and this one was pretty much what I was expecting based on your review. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into writing these reviews. :)

message 26: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Schlegel I just want to thank you for bringing this series to my attention. At 100 pages, I'll absolutely be reading this. If anyone knows where I can order prints of the covers, PLEASE TELL ME.

Monika K What a Fun review! 😉 I have joined the Dino Cult and just finished this. A perfect beach read, as it turns out. But I agree with everything. It felt fast and I would have enjoyed a slower burn. And definitely a tail. 🦖

Fun!

Yes, I can see this book being an excellent beach read. Shame about the lack of tail though ;)
