Thank you yes, this is exactly how I'm feeling! Giving up at 30%.
I see where you’re coming from with some points, but I’ve just finished this book and found it quite clever. A man swooping in and taking all of the credit for a woman’s hard work, leaving her with nothing? That’s how I saw it lol

yeah i 100% understand the ending and what the author was going for re: f*ck the patriarchy, but tbh i was just so sick of the book by that point
Didn't bother to finish this as once I'd sussed it was just an updated version of the far superior Kind hearts and Coronets, I got bored with it.
Honestly this review reflects how I feel about the book 100% I wish you'd edited it (or decided not to publish!)
Yes! This review explains my experience with this book so well! The little snippets and side comments were super annoying and was not a well written book!

omg YES like just look up a thesaurus online it's free!

honestly so disappointing bc the premise is actually somewhat interesting

hahahaha honestly me too
100% agree.
Grace was of the belief that she was superior to everyone, and she just kept on flaunting her intelligence at every turn when it was obvious that the character was only driven by revenge, and prone to mistakes and lapses in judgement. I like morally grey protagonists and unlikeable characters, but she was just painfully pretentious in a way that seemed unauthentic.
The last three chapters of the book honestly seemed like Bella Mackie was attempting to avoid explaining how she would win access to the trust fund, how the public would take her relation to Simon and how she would explain why she had hidden her relation to Simon to everyone around her. It was so anti-climactic.
Luckily, I only paid £4.50 for my copy.
And the use of “shabby” and “tiresome” twice in less than a page?
“As I approached the looming gates of this shabby place.” Is genuinely a sentence I would’ve written in my year 5 creative writing story
Very accurate review, basically encapsulates everything I wanted to say. It’s somewhat entertaining as a novel if you’re looking for a cheaply written holiday read and are willing to ignore the obvious plot holes and lord writing, but it fell flat in terms of what I was hoping to gain from it.
Yes exactly as you said the plot twist at the end just made the whole book experience just not it anymore, like excuse me the female character (can’t even remember her name) would not stay quiet so where’s her reaction to the email. And honestly I would’ve been okay if the book ended as soon as she like got out the prison gates and say hey to Jimmy.
That’s the whole of the writing it’s her deepest thoughts of her superior mind and body her believe that she is entitled to everything and yet looks down on everyone else who tries to be their own true self ..
as for the whole lot of people above me .. you mustn’t have read the book the same way I did .. keep going over the writing twice and get to see the way grace was thinking and writing .. as for the plot twist or the epilogue it was absolutely brill just shows you that crime doesn’t pay .. or maybe ? 🙃

nah i think the book was just f*cking dull
I’m only 4 chapters in and you have completely summarised every thought I’ve had so far. I feel like this book is Mackie projecting her dislike for pretty “Instagram” girls and coming across as a pick me. I’m enjoying the story so far though.
I enjoyed the majority of this book, ignoring some of the questionable digs the author wormed in there, but the ending?! I was really hoping for something better than that, to be honest. It was pretty painful to get through the last 40 pages.
This! All of this!! I was so looking forward to this book and now I wanna mourn the hours I spent reading this.

Completely agree! The immense amount of opportunity for tension and intrigue this book could’ve held for readers, yet there was none.
Absolutely agree with you! The ending just made the entire book pointless and why did she have to get f***ed over again by white entitled men? It just seemed tiresome
This is the perfect review! I’ve just finished it and binned it, can’t give it to a charity shop because I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
I am glad that I'm not the only one who caught the HUGE pick me vibes. At one point, it was so unbearable for me to read about Grace being "powerhouse" and "independent" while looking down on women who fancied fashion, makeup etc. I love morally grey characters but Grace was so busy with nitpicking everybody around her that the big goal of killing her family became secondary.
In the middle of this book now and your review is exactly how I feel! Finding it tough to keep going as it’s too long and long winded!
Excellent review!
I swear googling the author made the whole book make perfect sense. I was suddenly like Ohhhhhh that’s why it all feels so forced and unauthentic.
Couldn’t have said it better.. Grace was DISGUSTING to other women but kept talking about how women have to stick together and ranted about fake feminists ..
Thank you so much for writing down my exact thoughts. How was this book only 360 pages long? It felt like at least 500 and took me forever to finish
