I agree, we don't usually hear about people who work hard and don't succeed, and I think it's important for young people to understand that that happens.
For sure, and honestly it's important for everyone to understand that happens, because I was raised under that "with hard work you can do anything" myth and it did real harm to me. I half-killed myself trying to become a financially successful writer (meaning one who could consistently sell new books without having to work another job) and that didn't happen for me. I remember thinking. "I will do ANYTHING. I will SACRIFICE EVERYTHING. I will cut myself and bleed out all my blood into a bowl and give it to the publishing industry. I just want one more chance to break out. Just pay me to write one more book, please!" (This was after every book). My mental and physical health suffered. I isolated myself, became depressed. Thank goodness a kind therapist helped me learn to redefine "success" and take back control of my writing and my life.
So yeah, this book touched me in a powerful way and I'm glad people are still reading it. Thank you for your comment <3
