Tim Parks Ha. I haven't been there for years. Sometime maybe, I'm in Milan these days

OK, understood. Come when it's quiet..and foggy even - part of the atmosphere. There are a number of "events" happening during the year, so just avoid them! Happy New Year.

Tim Parks And to you...

Greg Tim, translations can be very tricky. I can't 'tackle the Italian' (I've tried that with Proust and it only led to frustration). But I did find the prose often beautiful: this is a work of atmosphere and mood and if the translator missed a few notes concerning the narrative, that's fine: it's a gorgeous work in English, to me.

Tim Parks He didn't miss a few notes, Greg. Alas. He entirely misunderstood all kinds of things. I made a long list. It's embarrassing. There is an earlier translation which is better and more accurate. Very strange when a translator does not even go back to check the previous translation after finishing his own... Still, yes, overall it's a lovely book.

David Infante Tim would you mind naming the earlier translator so I can seek a copy of that edition. I relish a challenge, especially during 'lockdown'. Regards.
