I haven't read 50 Shades, so I may be presumptuous in saying Yes! 20 shades of blue would be quite nice though, I like blue...

Neither have I. I just looked inside on Amazon, and it convinced me that 50SOG pretty much sucks. You're not presumptuous at all :)

It does raise the question of whether it's better that people should read more even if it is crap they are reading or not read at all. I don't think there is any real benefit in reading 50 Shades or Twilight (which I did read!).

That's a good question. I'd say let them read even if it's crap. The ones who realize it's crap will switch to better books eventually and the ones who don't, well, let them stay dump :)

Here in Thailand we like to encourage our people to read more, especially in English, though I don't think that should learn English from hacks :D

It's mine, too.

Yep. Better something than nothing (with a few extreme exceptions, perhaps).

The trouble is, there's so much online stuff in English, much of it rubbish, that that may still be the bigger influence.

Christophe Great review. I hope you'll find time to read other books by WSM. He was also an outstanding short story writer.

Thank you so much Christophe, and for reading my reviews too! 😊

PinkieBrown I felt the same way as you mentioned and how David Copperfield made me feel; that I was living inside this world. It must be a product of the length of the book that the depth of description m; following one character drags you in. It’s a feeling specific to these books I’ve found.
No Hardy wouldn’t have been happy with that ending- not enough sheep!😜

Thanks, PinkieBrown! 😊 I haven't read another one by Maugham since, just so little time...
