Cecily Hi-tech Rip Van Winkle? Sounds good.

But the "people talking to themselves" has been around since long before he wrote this book. I clearly remember the first time I passed someone in the street and assumed he was raving, only to realise he had a tiny earbud and wire. That was in a town I haven't worked in for at least 15 years. It's just that now the earpieces are wireless and tiny.

Excellent review, my friend.

Brittany Putting this on my want to read list! I recently read Warcross which seems to have similar technological developments to this book (glasses/contact lenses, most people living in an AR version of life), so I am very interested to see what this book does with them.

Cecily Possibly worth comparing and contrasting with Lock In, which was a great concept, but, imo, not a great book. It would make an excellent film, though.

Derek Scalzi does great concepts very well, but I'd never put him on my list of top authors—though I do read pretty well everything he writes.

Vinge does great concepts and writes very well. But he writes so little! It took decades to produce all three of his "Zones of Thought" books.

I'm definitely interested in this one. (Actually GR says I've read it, but I'm certain I've marked the wrong book as read...)

Apatt; we've talked about your arithmetic before. 2006 + 12 is not 2025 :-)

That was probably me going on about the AR in PoGo, you should have said hello!

Thanks Brittany, if you are looking for cerebral stimulation but not so much edge of the seat thrills, then this book will do 😊

Is he the Harper Lee of sci-fi? He has a lot in common with David Brin. An actual scientist, and follicly challenged.

"Apatt; we've talked about your arithmetic before. 2006 + 12 is not 2025 :-) "

F*king Excel! 😉

Derek He's not quite Harper Lee. He writes, but unlike a lot of authors, he apparently loved his day job! His profile says he's now retired—I don't know if that means he's getting more (fiction) writing done.

It's always safe to blame Excel...

Lars Dradrach Brilliant review Apat, I enjoyed this one as well but agree with you on Vinge's writing style which makes it hard to connect to the characters
