Perhaps, because of Cady's headaches, they were used to her not being around. I did find it strange at the time, that she was the only one of the liars expected at dinner every night.
Also the fact that the other three were able to live at Cuddledown and she wasn't didn't really mean anything to me until the end.
I agree that they were hallucinations and her brain was trying to protect her from the horrid truth- repression. I didn't really think anything about the other three living in Cuddledown because I figured their parents were letting them "grow up" by allowing them to stay in one of the houses together, but Cady's mom did not want her away from her side.
I don't understand how her heart fell out of her chest and she then still goes on a trip with her dad after he shot her. I don't understand how the liars are there after summer 15 are they vision or ghosts, are the aunts pretending that they are there so she can remember in her own time. So confusing but I loved the quotes in the book and how she repeated them we can really live by them.
Some of the parts in the book were confusing, like all the parts about Cady bleeding on Gat, (was that literal or metaphoric?) But what you’re referring to, (her heart fell out of her chest, her Dad shot her) these were all metaphors for how she felt. Heart broken is her heart falling out of her chest, betrayed is her dad “shooting” her.
I think they were actually meant to be ghosts because when Gat was already dead he was referring to himself as Heathcliff and talking to her about a book she'd never read, which he couldn't do if she'd just imagined him. And if they were just hallucinations, they probably would have known about all the emails and wouldn't have had to lie. Cady spending all her time alone at Cuddledown was weird to her mom but I think they thought they were giving her space and time to heal.
