I see your point. But remember, after America and Aspen had the big fight in the treehouse, Aspen did want to make amends and came to the train station. America completely misread what happened there. When he showed up as a guard at the palace, he made it very clear he was willing to fight for her. She waffled so much I don't blame Aspen for developing feelings for Lucy. I just never care for stories involving a love triangle where the author has to find a convenient way to get rid of the third wheel. I felt that although Maxon grew a lot in the story, Aspen always had strong character from his upbringing. Yes, it was always in him to be a provider and to want to "save" someone, but I think he did see America's strength and would have let her come into her own.
