I'd agree to that; sometimes when people have heard so much about a book, they start reading thinking that the writing will immediately knock their socks off, when instead it's a slow build up, over several decades of time and several hundred pages. However, Pillars has a knack for bringing back small details that the reader might have initially passed over as exposition, and bringing those quirks back in a big way. So I think Maria is absolutely right; give it a few months, and then try again.
This techique has helped me over the years with some very hyped books....to some, they really grew on me, to others....they really were not for me. But i tried, gave it a 2nd and sometimes 3rd chance.
