Paul Dunn The only problem I have with the Tuchman's,"Guns of August", is that the thesis of the book i.e. Europe just stumbled into war is wrong. Germany had extraordinary aggressive war plans as was outlined by Fritz Fisher in the mid sixtes. Nevertheless, the debate does continue. with swome scholars pointing to Russia and others to Serbia.I still think Tuchman is the best written of all the books I have read on the origins of the war, I just don't agree with her thesis

E. Kahn Fair enough. Fromkin's Europe's Last Summer explains the Aggressive Germany hypothesis. I didn't add it before because it's so weak compared to his Peace to End All Peace. I think anyone who reads PtEAP will end up reading everything Fromkin's ever written, anyway

Michael Samerdyke "Passage Through Armageddon" by W. Bruce Lincoln is a superb look at the Russian experience from 1914-1917. "Red Victory" by Lincoln about the Russian Civil War (1918-1921) is good, but I prefer Evan Mawdsley is an outstanding book about that extremely complicated conflict.

E. Kahn Thanks, Mike. What's the title of the Mawdsley book?
