I've been talking to a few mates who are bookaholics and they all said they never heard of it, and a few mates on here didn't hear of it either. Just got me thinking is all :D.
Your mates don't know much about fantasy then.
Well then they are not paying attention to modern fantasy. The series has received a lot of attention.
Maybe so. I didn't realise it tho. Hence the topic :D
If you like darker, more modern fantasy, other choices would be:
- A Song of Ice and Fire (George RR Martin), but you have likely read these. 5 out of 7 books completed
- The First Law Trilogy (Joe Abercrombie), completed and very character focused
- Malazan Book of The Fallen (Steven Erikson), massive 10 book series that is completed. This is as epic as they get but also pretty brutal and horrific at times
- The Gentleman Bastards (Scott Lynch), 3 out of 7 completed. Mix of gritty and fun, escapist, heist-like stuff
Brandon Sanderson and Patrick Rothfuss are also fantastic authors who askew traditional Tolkien fantasy, but aren't gritty like the above or Mark Lawrence.
Oh, and Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy was very much the inspiration for Mark Lawrence with its darker themes (but not so brutal) and first person perpective.
Malazan book of the fallen is very good, so is Ice and fire. Haven't read the rest but will look them up. Cheerio
Although it's not similar, i recommend promise of blood. you'll like it.
Promise of Blood is on my list. I was planning to wait until the trilogy is finished, as I have enough ongoing series right now. :D Brian McClellan learned from Brandon Sanderson, who might be favorite author due to Mistborn and Stormlight Archive.
what about the skulduggery pleasant series, ever read them.
Sorry, but I have been mostly ignoring young adult books, except for when something massive comes alog like Harry Potter (loved it), His Dark Materials (liked it) or Hunger Games (just okay). Other times I have attempted young adult, I have mostly just gotten mad at them, such as with Eragon.
I hated the hunger games. Can't stand it. I loved Eragon tho, it was brilliant. Harry potter was good, his dark materials were also good. didn't like the characters but interesting plot.
You'll love skullduggery tho, it's not the best written series, but it stays my favourite :D.
