I've had these same concerns with the other books. I started Mistborn and Way, but abandoned both after a few pages...
Well, to put it plainly: if you didn't like Mistborn then you're not going to like this. As far as I'm concerned, Mistborn is better than Way of Kings.
But that's just my humble opinion.

To be fair, I didn't give either book a fair shot. I remember it took me a long while to get through the first 100 pages of the Name of the Wind, but I did, and then finished the rest in a day and it's one of my favourite book series ever now.
