I do not believe it is YA but for some reason it was labeled as Sci-fi where I work.
It belongs on the same shelf as Richard Bach's Jonathon Livingstone Seagull. I can see those that don't distinguish sci-fi and fantasy mistakenly putting it in sci-fi. But in fact it has very little in common with say Star Trek (sci-fi) or Game of Thrones (hi fantasy).
