Monty J Heying East of Eden, Sweet Thursday and Log for the Sea of Cortez. And I thought Cannery Row was reasonably happy.

Steinbeck rarely wrote to entertain. He wrote to hold up a mirror to mankind so it could get a good look at its warts.

Rose B. Can't really think of any of his books having a happy ending, buy as Monty J Heying points out, his works were a mirror for mankind. I can't think of a happier ending than the reader, him/herself, taking a long, hard look at his/her flaws.

Rose B. To tell you the truth, stories that end in happily-ever-after don't really stay with me as those that are more realistic, tragic-those usually teach you better, deeper lessons.
