While I agree in the context of Mockingjay, I disagree about Veronica Roth, as I felt very few, if any, of the deaths contributed much to the story, other than shock value. While the "Big Death" at the finale wasn't done for shock value, and had been planned from the beginning, the ridiculous context makes it (and the events immediately prior to the death) rather unnecessary.
