I would say neither heroic nor a self-serving killer. As a pilot fighting for his country I would say he was humane in the B-17 incident, when they could not defend themselves, yet he was performing his duty when he went up against allied pilots that could defend themselves. If a hunter comes upon a wounded animal that has little chance to live, he would put the animal out of its misery, a humane thing to do, but when Franz came upon the B-17 that very likely would not survive its flight back to England, he did what he could to ensure that it at least had a chance by escorting it over the German defenses, thereby performing a humane act. War, though evil, does tend to bring out the best in Good men, no matter the side they fight on. It also brings out the evil in bad men, again, no matter the side they fight on. I like you comments, especially the one concerning the heirs of the Ye Old Pub.
