The question isn't really implying that connor and vanessa should have been together, but rather if connor's suicide could have possibly ceased to be existent or even postponed. If Vanessa and Tony would have picked up on the signs instead of being preoccupied with their new relationship. And I also just felt like the relationship was a bit rushed.
That's a good point, but I feel like Connor's decision was inevitable. He felt stuck, and it is shown that Tony had tried helping Connor, to no avail. I loved Connor very much, but I don't think it was something that could've been prevented, unless his mother changed. That last letter was what truly threw him over the edge. Before that letter, he really had a chance at getting better and was trying. After that letter, everything went downhill really quick.
