It's a good book in a literary sense, but not a moral sense. It questions deeply America at a time when it was most unquestionable. Half the people in the real-life troupe reflected in the book were gay in an America in an era when homosexuality was unspeakable and criminal. Neal Casady, the model for Dean Moriarty, was a bi-sexual satyr. The Beats were the provenance of the Beatniks who were the provenance of the Hippies. In these ways and more, On the Road is much more the Great Anti-American Novel than the Great.
