Katie Beasley-Duffy I agree. Prim is symbolic of innocence and purity. Killing her off was symbolism of killing off innocence after the war had ended.

After everything the characters had experienced, it was impossible to maintain any sense of innocence and purity.

I also agree with the second, more brutal analysis -- war is war and people, including children, die.

Matthew Cole I agree. I also think it is a reflection on Katniss' journey throughout the series. The whole reason Katniss got involved in The Hunger Games was to protect her sister, her return to the games in the Quarter Quell, and part of the reason why she agreed to become the Mockingjay in District 13's rebellion. To lose that purpose in the senseless death of Prim forces Katniss and readers to confront the idea that everything our protagonist went through was for nothing (since unlike Gale, Katniss was not particularly interested in the politics of the revolution and only joined the rebellion out of necessity).

Trixie Teapot me too! it also added some emotional lift. plus, how else would katniss find out about coin being completley aginst her?
