I was also a teenager when I read it and 20 years later I still remember feeling odd about it. I know she loved her friends, but she was not exactly sexually attracted to ALL her friends. I don't really remember much of the book, but I do remember her Dad being abusive and jealously guarding her sexuality. I remember thinking she was being molested by her father. I figured she was either so used to being used sexually that it was natural for her to agree. This made me sad. From another angle I see it as a form of rebellion against her father. It certainly seemed creepy though. I feel he wrote it for shock value.
