Letitia Totally agree, although that doesn't stop him from still being a hypocritical, sexist prick

You know what that is exactly it. For men, a woman is either a goddess or a slut. And being a woman let me make it clear - 1. We don't smell like roses.
2. Looking beautiful or sexy doesn't mean we are doing it for men.
3. Looking beautiful or sexy doesn't imply come and fuck.
4. We don't want you to worship us.
5. We want you to respect us.
6. And this goes for all those bimbos as well.
Happy (Indian) Republic Day everyone.

Laura Herzlos It is true that Angel did not act with malice (being the villain of the story). However, I believe neither did Alec. Alec may have wronged Tess at the beginning, but he spent the rest of it trying to make amends, even to marry her (had she not been married to Angel) to "legitimize" her, in a way. He tries to care for her -and her family- as best he can. I don't think he qualifies as the villain of the story. He errs, repents and tries to atone. In fact... the saddest thing about this story is that it has no villain, really, except for uptight Victorian societal mores.
