From this perspective Boxer can be viewed as the faith/hope characteristic of the proletariat, and Benjamin is representative of their cynic/skeptic side. Both are essentially powerless to change the corruption in their world, so Boxer and Benjamin illustrate two ways that the oppressed deal with their oppression.
I think sometimes we bury our head in the sand and try to block out what's going on around us. Benjamin was more concerned about his own survival than upsetting the apple cart, so to speak. I do think if we see injustice going on around us we need to speak up but I do think its very difficult standing alone, especially when the great masses is so easily persuaded by propaganda and accept the status quo.
