I found myself obsessively concerned about Popper's well being for the majority of the novel. I swore that if anything bad happened to that dog I wouldn't finish.
The ending was certainly a let down for me as well. Its almost like the writer lost steam at the end and just wrote a bunch of babble. After reading 700 pages I really was hoping for a much stronger ending.
I too could have done without the Amsterdam angle. It was long and a touch overdone at the end. I also wanted more Hobie and Popper.
I loved more than half of this book, and then the last 200 pages excrutiating to read. I skimmed through to the end. Could not wait to finish. I became very preachy to me. I don't like all the compaisons to Dicken's either. I was never bored by Dicken's.
Claudia: I so agreed. I got as far as planning the wedding, I had to stop for a few days. When it was time to pick it, I realized I didn't want to. However excellent the book had been, it had become more and more depressing, even self-indulgent, with little indication of any growth. Reading these comments now, it appears putting the book down was a good choice (and I feel less guilty!)
When Popper was still in Vegas I really, really got nervous and angry. When Theo arrived, both him and Boris proved to really loved him. When Theo takes Popper with him I could not have been more relieved and happy with Theo. Fortunately Popper stayed with Hobbie who embraced him from the very beginning. NY with Hobbie were the best for Popper at the end, no Amsterdam adventures. And remember how HOBBIE cared about his loved-ones, being the kids, the dogs (Pippa's terrier) and the antiques also.
