Lisa Marie Gabriel 1960? I remember reading it in school and thinking it was about the 1930s... not because of the writing which I do love, but because what happened seemed so out of touch with my world in the UK.(less)

Tom Iftner You are right, story takes place from 1933-1935, but it was published in 1960.

Lisa Marie Gabriel Well that explains why I thought it was the 1930s :D I still love the book... and Gregory Peck!

Elaine There's no way that To Kill a Mockingbird would have the emotional whallop that it had in the 1950's. For one thing, it was before the Civil Rights Movement had really taken off. Most middle-class whites never thought about what it meant to be black in a white racist society. The subtlety--that the victim was being punished because he dared to feel compassion for a white girl was not even understood by readers or movie goers. We've come a l-o-n-g way since then. I grew up in a mixed race neighborhood, a rarity in the 1940's and 50's, so I understood the pain of my "colored" friends.
