I am a Donleavey fan and at many points in The Ginger Man in particular stopped and thought 'this is terrible, why am I reading it' and could readily answer that it was because the writing was that good. That is the first joy as a reader in getting to know characters that one would not necessarily invite to dinner.
Elmer Gantry is a great example. He is just too slimy to like, but I did like the book.
