i agree with your comments. It's not supposed to be that realistic, it's almost a modern fairy tale. The reader needs to suspend disbelief, kick back and enjoy a great story in which every little detail is relevant.

realistic maybe not. It's fantasy. I loved it!
I don't think any part of this book is realistic but isn't that the whole point? It's like saying 'Do you think Alice in Wonderland is realistic?'
I think it is realistic because Sam planted the onions there. plants produce seeds and they would keep growing in that area plus it would rain in that area also
