Hi Annetta. You are right, the first section is autobiographical. However, in an ingenious way it shows us how our lives and experiences play into our writing. Just as our characters must have motivations for what they do, we too, as writers are motivated to write about things that move and motivate us. That comes from our own experiences.
Stephen also shows us that even a man who is considered "one of the best writers on the planet" also has experienced and continues to experience the same frustrations we all have felt. I think the important point is that he continued to write and never gave up.
If you read more you will see much more of his thoughts on the craft itself – the tools of writing – if you will.
Your reaction is understandable...but read on! You already know the importance of grabbing readers immediately and then holding their interest. Stephen is a master at guiding readers through a story, pacing, when to answer a question brewing in the reader's mind, when to leave them hanging... in short he shows you HOW to grab the reader's attention and keep it.
I've read this book so many times my copy is dogeared. Best wishes and good luck with your writing.
