That's what I have been thinking about Hardy's novels. I'm sorry for what you have passed, but like you said, his novels are the total opposite of fairy tales and Dickens'. In order to read Hardy one needs to harden the heart and say "Unfortunately, this is how the world works"
Carrie, I commend your courage in reading Jude again. Great readers share a common trait with great writers it seems to me and that is empathy. Try Madame Bovary if you haven't already.
