YesI think RP was Pi's inner "god", the one he needed to find in order to survive the ordeal. I think the 'no looking back' was Pi's realization at the enormity of what he'd accomplished and the difficulty in accepting his strength.
Totally, I added some similar thoughts before seeing your answer and completely agree.

I agree with you, Aneta. That part of him just receded back into the "wilderness of his soul" until if/when it is needed again. It didn't say goodbye because it never left, it is still a part of him.
That's exactly how I interpreted it also. The tiger was the animal instinct that allowed him to survive and when he reachd the shore, it was no longer needed.
Sarah I think your interpretation is slightly different more complete than Aneta's. RP didn't simply 'vanish', he just went back into pi's subconscious jungle where he came from. He didn't say good bye because he didn't leave.
hmmm but why does he cry about never having a chance to say goodbye? Ya you left that side of you behind but he gives some speech about meeting people in life and never getting the chance to say goodbye.. Doesn't make sense to me.
