Ali McAvoy Because she committed a social taboo in having sexual relations with a man outside of wedlock and was thus punished into wearing an insignia on her breast to single her out to the community for her sin. She didn't like the man she had sex with - Arthur Dimmesdale - because their affair caused her to be isolated from humanity while he said or did nothing about it and virtually got away with everything without the community singling him out. In other words, she got the blame while he was still idolized by the community (because he is an important religious figure to them), and he never said anything to defend her (until the end).
