You're right, movie musicals tend to be a bit.... cheap? I looked forward to Les Mis so much last year that I was quite disappointed when it didn't fulfill what I got from Broadway and the book. The only movie musicals I've enjoyed are ones like The Sound of Music and South Pacific. And maybe Phantom of the Opera.
