I too listened to the audio version. I forgot about that scene outside the hotel. It wasn't mentioned again. I feel like part of my book was missing... either that, or the story skipped. One minute Ursula is meeting a handsome German man (some distant cousin to her hosts) and the next she has a baby and the Russians are approaching. Did I miss something. BTW... I loved the book.
Kristin- I think that the scene with Ursula's mother in London with the strange man meant that she was having an affair, but the man never showed up again. I think that the point was that Ursula's mother is unhappy in every iteration of Ursula's life and that includes and affair in one version of events. She also kills herself every time, I believe. The surgical scissors are in her drawer, I guess, because one of the times she delivers Ursula and Dr. Fellowes has to cut the umbilical cord, Sylvie thinks that a pair of surgical scissors would come in handy and she should get some. This particular point in the book made me wonder if the other characters in the book were remembering things from Ursula's repetitive lives, too.
