Thanks for answering these questions. I did some additional research and see tha tmost people state it was a fire that happened at the end of the book. I really liked Frank (the only passable character, likeable character in the book). I really wanted to like this book but I just didn't. It grew more infuriating to me with every page I turned. The narrator was so mousy and had no personality. Maxim seemed like such an angry, intolerant jerk. One of the most annoying books I've read in a long time.
Your review made me lol! I found myself disliking Maxim too. Other than that I really did enjoy it. This why I enjoy goodreads I like seeing what other people think about books I'm reading!
I did not know about the Henry/Maxim part, good to know. As for me the only two characters I liked in the novel was Frank and the narrator/2nd Mrs de Winter.
