I think the reason is because Charlie never admits to people when he was uncomfortable. He just let people do whatever they did because he was their friend (Ex - Pat kissing him). Sam points this out and that is why Aunt Helen chose Charlie. He would let her do anything because she was the only person who understood him in his mind.
