Monty, When Holden first mentions Phoebe, there is a noticeable drop in profanity. Perhaps that's what you remembered.
Throughout the book you'll see other examples of that: whenever he's angry or being cynical, he swears a lot, but when he's talking about something that makes him happy, he swears much less (or not at all).
