So, Chuck...what would you think had Pi never offered an alternative version of his adventure?
Deborah: There is what happened, and the fantastic fiction his mind created to survive it. One he could accept and one was too horrible to bare. Nonetheless, he lives with and is aware of both. (Great question you raised re: the Meercats...I have no idea what that represented)
